Balanced Scorecards as a Performance Management Tool
Balanced Scorecards as a Performance Management Tool Balanced Scorecards as a Performance Management Tool When you become hyper-focused on one aspect of your job, you can damage the overall health of your business. Because of this, many business leaders choose to implement a âBalanced Scorecardâ approach in their organization. What is a balanced scorecard and how can you use it to not only get your financials in order but as a performance management tool, too? What Is a Balanced Scorecard? The balanced scorecard is a report that looks at a variety of different areas. One template that is good for all users does not exist as the balanced scorecard is adjustable for every business and every need- its even used as a people management tool. The goal of a balanced scorecard is to help you focus on more than just one area of the business- usually, people are focused on the financials. If sales are going well then thatâs all you need to focus on, right? Well, wrong. Managers always have more responsibilities than just the bottom line numbers. The traditional balanced scorecard focuses on four areas: FinancialCustomerProcessOrganizational Capacity (or learning and growth) While these categories come from the original creators of the balanced scorecard, namely, Dr. Robert Kaplan and Dr. David Norton, youâre not limited in its use to only their ideas, although they are good recommendations. What you need to do is to make sure that youâre focusing on the priorities that each manager needs to achieve to make their department better. In this way, you meld departments and interests and come together as a performing company. The balanced scorecard was often used as a sort of dashboard of measurable factors relating to your business. It has now become part of a broader strategic way in which to view the organization. This broader outlook includes other less tangible factors as key strategic indicators. Using a Balanced Scorecard as a Performance Management Tool A positive outcome of using a balanced scorecard is that it makes performance in multiple areas readily observable. When you take all aspects of a job into consideration you can see what areas are strong and what areas are weak. When you look at only one aspect of performance you can see if there is an overall problem, but you donât have the information you need to fix the situation. For instance, Steve is the manager of the produce section of a grocery store. Traditionally, his manager looked at his profit and loss numbers and decided whether he was a good or a bad manager. But, see what happens when you add in the other three areas of his responsibility to the balanced scorecard. Customer: What type of feedback are you receiving from customers? Have you gotten complaints about the quality of the produce? Or, has the department received praise for a quality product? What are the customers saying about the staff? Do they find them helpful or unhelpful? Itâs easy to determine who the customer is in a retail organization and sometimes not quite as obvious in an internal department, but everyone has a customer. You need to identify who that customer is for every group- both the internal and external customers. This hypothetical produce manager should have specific metrics you look at to determine how the customer service is going. Good marks from customers and great financials are both positives. Bad marks and great financials could mean you have a serious problem waiting to happen. For instance, if your manager has been boosting profits by selling substandard produce, customers will eventually go elsewhere. Looking at the customer feedback helps warn you. Process: Processes are activities that are internal to the business. How is this manager doing with internal processes and procedures? Has he developed the procedures for his area of responsibility and do they align with the overall company processes? When you are implementing processes and procedures across sites or across departments, they are measured in this category. Additionally, the processes measured can be specific to his department. So, Steve, the example produce manager has processes for buying, rotating, and selling product. How much produce is thrown out? What are his processes for handling discarded produce to ensure your increased profit? Again, if youâre just looking at profit and loss you may not know where you need to make improvements, but if youâre looking at profits and you find out that the produce isnât being repackaged properly, this will give you insights. Organizational Capacity- Learning and Growth: You need to hold every manager of people accountable for their people. A manager with sky-high turnover is not a good manager. A manager whose people are never prepared to move to a higher level is not a good manager. When youâre talking about people, you can never focus completely on the present- you always need to prepare to move forward, and that requires training and development. So, you need to hold the example produce manager accountable for his turnover as well as his pipeline for internal positions and external growth (speaking of his department). In a grocery store environment, you need people who are cross-trained and understand multiple departments, especially at the management level. They can only become capable of managing multiple departments if they do the work at the lower levels as well. So, this, combined with the internal processes, part of the balanced scorecard helps managers know how they are doing with their people processes. When you take a look at all four of these areas (and each area can have multiple goals), you have created a great performance management tool. You know about the personâs overall success and the factors that make up that success- or failure. The balanced scorecard allows you to correct problems before permanent damage is done. Do You Have to Stick to the Traditional Balanced Scorecard? Absolutely not. Make adjustments to your balanced scorecard to support what your business needs. You can even use the balanced scorecard approach to managing your own life. Every aspect of your life and business are multi-faceted and the balanced scorecard allows you to look at all of the differences in one spot. It gives you an overview that can help you determine which way you want to go- for true success in work and life.

3 Scariest Resume Mistakes #8212; and How to Fix Them
3 Scariest Resume Mistakes #8212; and How to Fix Them 3 Scariest Resume Mistakes #8212; and How to Fix Them I (Donât) Know What You Did Last Summer Gaps on your resume are a red flag to many employers. When months or years go unaccounted for, employers will want to know why. While gaps are bad, trying to cover them can be even worse. According to Forbes, many job seekers with spotty employment history use a functional (or skill-based) format instead of the more standard chronological format. However, Penelope Patsuris points out that âthe format makes managers suspicious and more intent on piecing together a timeline of your employment.â There are a few reasons you might have gaps on your resume; here are some of the most common and how you can present them in a positive light. According to Kim Isaacs, Monster.comâs resume expert, one way to gloss over employment gaps is to list only the years of employment instead of complete dates. Short gaps will be invisible if you describe your employment as â2012-2014â instead of âJanuary 2012-February 2014.â If you took time off to raise children or care for an elderly relative, just say so. You can also easily explain a gap year spent traveling or continuing your education. While youâre looking for a job, take time to volunteer in your community. Not only will your volunteer experience cover the gap in your resume, but it will also look great to a potential employer. And hey you just might make a valuable connection or learn a new skill while youâre volunteering. Night of the Working Dead Liz Ryan, CEO of Human Workplace, cautions job seekers against writing in âBoilerplate Zombie language, using phrases like âResults-oriented professional with a bottom-line orientation.ââ When aiming for a professional tone, many resumes end up sounding boring, lifeless, or terribly generic. Avoid these common resume writing errors: Vague language such as stuff or things; Meaningless buzzwords such as synergy; Weak verbs such as was, did, worked, and experienced; Clichés such as people person, problem solver, and perfect fit for the team; Overused words such as driven, creative, effective, and motivated. Instead, focus on specific examples (especially quantifiable accomplishments), strong and active verbs, and clear, concise language. Invasion of the Grammar Errors As this hilarious (and, thankfully, fake) resume highlights, your word processorâs spell check is not without fault. If you rely solely on it, you may find yourself proudly proclaiming to be a âBachelorette of Science.â Here are a few proofreading pointers: Let your resume rest for at least 24 hours after writing it. Approaching it with fresh eyes helps you to avoid overlooking obvious mistakes. Read it out loud. If you read a sentence differently than the way you wrote it, you may want to change the wording. Reading aloud also helps catch missing words and other errors. Ask a friend preferably an English major to look over your resume. If you donât have your very own proofreader on speed dial (or if you just donât want to bother your busy friends), use Grammarlyâs automated proofreading tool. Always re-check for spelling and grammar errors after updating your resume. Whatâs your biggest resume fear? Gather âround the comments campfire and tell your spookiest job hunting story! IT Hiring and the Growing Demand for IT Skills and IT Talent
IT Hiring and the Growing Demand for IT Skills and IT Talent IT Hiring and the Growing Demand for IT Skills and IT Talent IT Hiring and the Growing Demand for IT Skills and IT Talent Blaszczyk, Managing Editor, Resource Center As the economy recovers and business picks up,the need for IT skillswill continue to expand. The demand means that competition forIT skills and IT talent for both big and small companies will grow and evolve. For small companies, says Judith Hurwitz, author of Smart or Lucky? How Technology Leaders Turn Chance into Success, that points to both challenges and advantage. We spoke with Hurwitz about the post-recession IT recruitment landscape and how companies cancompete for talent as part of their IT hiring. Monster: What impact has the recession had on IT recruitment? Hurwitz: The recession has had a major impact on IT jobs. But it isnt what you might expect. There is actually a lack of resources in many areas of technology recruiting.I am seeing that individuals who have continued to upgrade their skills focused on what companies need are actually doing quite well. So, for example, developers who understand how to develop for the cloud or are focused on development for mobile applications are doing well. Likewise, companies that are focused on enterprise architecture and customer-facing environments have great opportunities.Individuals who have not upgraded their IT skills are suffering in this economy. Monster: Will there be sufficient talent to meet demand for IT skills as more and more companies recover and grow within IT recruiting? Hurwitz: I think that there is a lack of talent to meet the demand of companies that are inventing new technology to meet emerging needs.I am constantly hearing from technology innovators that they are having trouble finding enough computer engineers. The good news is that students who used to focus only on Wall Street jobs are now looking at opportunities in the technology market. Monster: The economic recovery will make it challenging for small businesses to retain their IT talent. How can they compete with larger firms to both retain and attract IT skills? Hurwitz: While it is clear that small companies can be at a disadvantage in recruiting IT talent, they also have a strategic advantage. Many smart entrepreneurs like the idea of working for an emerging company where they can make a difference as an individual. In fact, smaller companies are a great way for a smart IT professional to move faster than they could at a large hierarchical organization. Monster: Do smaller companies need to be prepared to offer a much higher pay scale for IT candidates than they might with other candidates? Hurwitz: Small companies have to be prepared to compete for talent as part of their IT recruiting. A lot of what companies look for depends on how strategic IT is to their strategy and business. So, if the small company delivers its value online then it needs to pay a premium to hire the most sophisticated IT professionals. However, if IT is a back office function it may not be as important to look for the most expensive talent. Monster: On average, do skilled IT employees tend to move from company to company more frequently than other employees? Hurwitz:IT professionals do have a tendency to move around based primarily on the types of projects they want to work on. The smartest professionals like to be challenged and they like to be able to work on the most important emerging technologies. However, in a down market, you do see more IT professionals becoming more cautious about moving too much. That will change as the market picks up. Monster: Weve reported on the growing demand for hybrid candidates in IT recruiting employees who have both IT and business skills. Is this demand likely to increase in the next year or two? Hurwitz:Employees that have skills in both IT and business have long been the most desirable to businesses. It is clear that as IT has become not just an enabling technology but part of the business strategy. Therefore, hybrid candidates are not just a nice to have but a requirement especially for professionals who want to increase their value and their salaries. I think this demand for IT and business skills will dramatically increase so that it is a prerequisite for success. Monster: What type of IT skills are most in-demand by employers as we emerge from the recession in IT recruitment? How will these needs likely evolve as the economy grows stronger? Hurwitz:The type of IT skills that are most needed are in several different areas. First, companies need developers that take a holistic perspective on technology. They do not simply know one programming language or one skill. They understand how to work with different platforms desktops, mobile, cloud to name a few. They have to understand information management, security, and integration. Most importantly, they need to manage the relationship between technology components from how it impacts the business. Monster: Where will employers have to go to find the best IT talent in the recovery? How will these shifts impact global IT recruiting? Hurwitz:There are different places to find the best IT talent. Increasingly companies will be looking across the globe for IT talent. In addition, companies need to be looking to colleges, not just for post-graduate recruiting. Some of the most innovative companies are initiating programs in community colleges to create programs based on their future needs. In other cases, these companies are establishing partnerships with colleges and universities by offering the types of courses that will train future employees. Monster: Could increased global demand significantly reset current employee compensation rates for IT talent? Hurwitz:The fact that companies can reach out across the world for talent has had an impact on salaries. Therefore its more imperative than ever for IT workers to upgrade their skills based on the future, not the past. Monster: Does managing an IT department require a different set of guidelines than those of other departments within the organization? Hurwitz: There are differences between the IT department and other organizations. One of the key reasons for this is that technology changes and evolves at a much faster rate than most areas of business. With the growth of social business and social networking, for example, developers have to expand the reach of their technology offerings in new and unpredictable directions. Business strategy may evolve on a yearly basis but technology strategy can often force business to change in months. Author Bio Judith Hurwitz is author of Smart or Lucky? How Technology Leaders Turn Chance into Success.(Wiley, 2011) As President and CEO of Hurwitz Group, Inc., a strategy consulting and research firm focused on distributed computing technologies, Hurwitz has been a thought leader in the software industry for more than 25 years. She has been a computer journalist, computer industry analyst, strategy consultant, programmer and commentator. She is a highly sought-after consultant and has consulted for many of the established and emerging software companies in the market. In 1996, Business Week named her one of the top 100 women in the computer industry.

ENFP Personality Type - Your MBTI Type and Your Career
ENFP Personality Type - Your MBTI Type and Your Career ENFP Personality Type - Your MBTI Type and Your Career ENFP stands for Extroversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving, and it is one of 16 personality types assigned to individuals after they take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Career counselors and other career development specialists use this personality inventory to help clients choose careers and make other employment-related decisions. The code stands for an individuals preferences- the way he or she likes to do certain things. Carl Jung, a psychiatrist, was the first person to identify these 16 personality types, and later Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers developed the MBTI based on them. Being an ENFP makes you different from someone who is one of the other 15 types. Not only do you prefer to energize, perceive information, make decisions, and live your life differently, but the combination of these preferences also sets you apart from others. The uniqueness of your personality type is what makes specific careers and work environments more suitable for you. E, N, F, and P: What Does Your Personality Type Code Mean? Lets take a closer look at your personality type. What does each letter mean? E (Extroversion): You have a preference for extroversion (sometimes spelled extraversion). That means you are energized by other people or by external experiences. You like interacting with others.N (iNtuition): You use more than your five senses (hearing, sight, smell, touch, and taste) to process information. You also have a sixth sense, called intuition, on which you rely heavily. It means that you dont need physical evidence to know something exists. You know its there even if you cant hear, see, smell, feel, or taste it. Intuition allows you to consider future possibilities and ultimately take advantage of them. F (Feeling): You tend to make decisions based on your feelings and personal values. Your strong feelings about something may prompt you to move forward without fully considering the consequences. Your sensitivity to the needs of other people makes you a caring person who likes to help others.P (Perceiving): Having a preference for flexibility and spontaneity means planning isnt your thing. This contributes to one of your greatest strengths, but also one of your most significant weaknesses. Adapting quickly to changes is no problem, but meeting deadlines can be challenging. Realizing your preferences are not set in stone is essential to your ability to adapt to a variety of situations at work. Just because you prefer to do something a particular way doesnt mean its the only way you can do it. For example, you can occasionally work independently even though extroversion is your preference. You should also note that your preferences may change throughout your life. Careers and Work Environments That Are a Good Fit for Your ENFP Personality Type When choosing a career, make sure it is a good fit for your personality. It must also be compatible with your values and interests, and take advantage of your aptitudes. A thorough self-assessment will provide all the information needed to make an informed decision. All four letters in your personality type are significant, but when it comes to choosing a career, your focus should be on the middle two letters, in your case N and F. Occupations that involve developing and implementing new ideas take advantage of your ability to look toward the future. Take your values into consideration as well, since your preference for Feeling (F) indicates that you like to take them into account when making decisions. Here are some careers that are a good fit for ENFPs: Customer Service RepresentativeTravel AgentMarketing ManagerPsychologistDietitian/NutritionistSpeech PathologistOccupational TherapistTeacherSocial WorkerLibrarianUrban PlannerMarriage and Family TherapistMental Health CounselorWriter/EditorTV ProducerGraphic DesignerPublic Relations SpecialistNews Anchor The Bottom Line When evaluating job offers, take into account your preferences for extroversion (E) and perceiving (P). Since you get energy from outside sources, look for a work environment where you can surround yourself with people. Dont forget your preference for perceiving, which means you enjoy flexibility and spontaneity. Look for jobs that dont emphasize strict deadlines. Pdf vs. Word - The Best Resume Format in 2019
Pdf vs. Word - The Best Resume Format in 2019 Pdf vs. Word - The Best Resume Format in 2019 HBO or Netflix? PDF resume or Word resume? The struggle is real. You have chosen the best resume template. Updated your resume, highlighted your best negotiable skills and run it through a spell check. Now the only question is how do you submit it. After you have got your resume ready, do not send it right away! Stop and check the final formatting. Is it in a PDF format or a WORD format? The answer is not at all complicated. In this blog post, we will help you make the best decision. Before you send your resume, make sure it looks professional. Check out Hiration's professional Online resume builder. It provides 20+ free prefessional resume templates to make your resume stand out. We shall be covering the following topics. Why is choosing PDF or Word so important? The companies receive a lot of job applications for an average single job opening. To sort these thousands of applications, they use certain softwares. Because, well, recruiters are also humans! These softwares are called Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) software. They sort the resumes by relevance, checking them for keywords for the job description. If you include all the relevant keywords on your resume, ATS will rank it higher. To stand out, you should carefully tailor your resume to fit the job description. Add the right keywords to your resume to be above everyone else. Hiring managers usually go for the names that appear on the top of the results. This is why only a certain people are able to grab the interview. So where does the PDF resume and Word resume fit in? The catch here is that: ATS software is not able to read any special formatting. Therefore it is critical for you to choose your PDF or Word format rightly. Email your resume right. Do not forget to include the correct format to the hiring manager. Need some directions to email your resume? Check out our comprehensive guide to emailing resumes with free samples and examples here. Some older versions of ATS software have problems reading PDF. It is also critical about the specific resume fonts. You need to make sure that you have an ATS-friendly version of your resume. Confused about which resume fonts to use and which to avoid? Can not tell which paired fonts look better for your job profile? Check out this blog post by Hiration that discusses 10+ modern font styles for your resume. But how do you know if your resume will have to pass through ATS or not? Many large companies are most likely to use some form of software. If you are applying to a large firm, there is a good chance that the company is processing your resume information with the help of an ATS software. Smaller enterprises or startups are less likely to use the software. However, do not take the chance. If there is a big possibility that your resume is going to pass through an ATS, we have got some amazing hacks for you. Remember the following rules about formatting: No charts, graphs, images, text boxes, or special formatting should be used. No special symbols to separate information. Unless they are standard symbols on a keyboard (- / *). Upload a resume in a Word file (.doc / .docx). Do not prefer a PDF resume, RTF, or JPG. Using PDF If you are using a PDF resume format, keep in mind the following points: A PDF resume can not be altered. If you are emailing your resume directly to the hiring manager, choose a PDF resume. Sending your resume as PDF resume ensures that your formatting remains consistent throughout. PDF format is secure, virus-free, and compatible across all platforms. Sending a PDF assures that your employer receives your resume formatting exactly as you see it on your screen. On virtual platforms, everyone can open a resume in PDF format on their screens. Creating a PDF resume gives you more creative options to explore. Some ATS software have trouble reading PDF resumes. The more creative aspects of your PDF resume can be skipped by the ATS software. It will not read graphics or text hidden in images. You can easily create PDF resumes using softwares like Photoshop. It gives you a lot of freedom in your layout and graphic design on your resume. Export your resume as a PDF or DOC with our online resume builder. How do you know if your PDF file is okay? Highlight, copy, and paste the text. If your computer can read the text, your format is alright. Quick Tip: If you are sending a PDF resume, make sure it is not saved as an image. Using Word A Word doc can be altered. Choose a Word doc if do not want to face the complicated nature of ATS tracking systems. If you are applying to a role with no referrals or previous internal connections, submit your resume via Word to get rid of the ATS obstacles. If you are applying to large businesses, use Word Format. Big recruiting agencies generally prefer the Word format. This is because of the database systems they use to save, store, organize and distribute your resume! Everyone in the computer world has Word access. ATS software can easily read a Word doc resume. Many companies prefer documents saved in a .docx format. The formatting gets jumbled up if your resume is opened in a tool other than Word. This can result in the accidental removal or rearrangement of content. Others can change or delete sections of your resume in a doc file. This may happen deliberately or accidentally. Quick Tip: Recruiters generally remove the candidateâs contact information from a resume before forwarding it. So that is another reason to submit your resume in a (.doc or .docx) Word format! Before sending your resume in Word, remember to turn off tracked changes and delete all comments. You should also make sure that document properties like Author Info and Title are correct. Choose the best format for your resume Applying to online jobs If you are applying for a job online, check the job posting. It usually provides information on how to send your resume. They include the instructions about what format to send your resume. Some require plain text, while others require PDF or Word as an attachment. No format specifications If no information is provided in your job listing, you should email or call to ask which one is preferred. If, for some reason you can not ask the company, then it is advisable that you send your resume in PDF format. Do mention that Word format is available if required. Sending both Word and PDF If you have the option of attaching your resume in both PDF and Word formats, go for it. This allows the hiring manager to choose his preference. However, this might take up more of the storage space and time. Quick Save Checklist As you save your final resume format, STOP before you press send. Remember to keep these points in mind: With the advent of Applicant Tracking System software, it becomes more important to know how to save your resume. If you send a resume that is not formatted well, it may not pass through ATS software. Then it becomes virtually impossible to reach a human recruiter. Keep both, your PDF and DOCX resumes handy!

Amazon patents wristbands to track workers movements
Amazon patents wristbands to track workers' movements Amazon patents wristbands to track workers' movements In the near-future, employees will wear tracking wristbands in the office that will know where they have gone - including bathroom breaks and if you stray too far from your workstation - and when. When employees go somewhere their bosses do not want them to be, the wristbands can alert them with a vibrating buzz. When performances reviews come up, bosses will be able to point to days they have noticed employees slacking off. While some of us may see this future as an Orwellian nightmare, Amazon is one step closer to making this a reality for its warehouse workers. This week, the company was awarded two patents for an âultrasonic braceletâ that will allow Amazon to monitor in real time where workers are.Amazon patents wristband to track workersAccording to the patent applications filed in 2016, the technology would use âproximity signal transmittersâ placed within the warehouse and on the workersâ wrists to track movements. The ultrasonic sound pulses would transmit âhap tic feedbackâ to workersâ wrists if they incorrectly chose an inventory bin. Justifying its technologyâs existence, the patent notes that, âexisting approaches for keeping track of where inventory items are stored ⦠may require the inventory system worker to perform time consuming acts.âAn awarded patent does not guarantee an inventionâs release, but it shows that Amazon is putting time and moneyed resources towards eking out every last drop of efficiency it can get from its workers. To Amazon warehouse workers, who say they face pressure to meet inventory targets quickly, this invention is a likely reality.âThey want to turn people into machines,â Max Crawford, a former Amazon warehouse worker told the New York Times. âThe robotic technology isnât up to scratch yet, so until it is, they will use human robots.âWorkplace tracking devices increasingly being usedIf you think you may be spared from this tracking future because you do not work for Amazon, think a gain. dont start your cover letter with my name is and other rules
dont start your cover letter with my name is and other rules dont start your cover letter with my name is and other rules Some random thoughts from hiring work recently, in no particular order: * Do not start your cover letter with My name is unless you are under the age of 10. This does not make you sound like a grown-up. * When a job posting asks for something like 2-3 years experience and you have 10+ years of experience, you need to address that in your cover letter. That employer is telling you clearly that theyre envisioning someone more junior in their career than you are, and your chances of being considered will go up dramatically if you explain why youre interested anyway and why youd excel in the job. You might think that this is obvious (and that clearly more knowledge and more experience will help you do a better job), but if you dont explicitly address it, they will assume that you didnt read the job posting clearly, that youll be bored in the role, or that youre going to try to turn the role into something other than what they need, and they will pass you up. * Stop writing Salary is negotiable when the recipient of your letter never even asked you about salary. * Do not send a resume with no dates of employment on it. Ive seen a handful of candidates doing this recently, and someone out there must be telling them that this is a good thing to do (probably to avoid age discrimination, is my guess). This makes it look like youre trying to hide something, and its incredibly unhelpful I want to know how recent your experience was and how long you did it for. Holding a job for 10 months nine years ago is very different from having done it for five years very recently. (And if it is being done to avoid revealing your age, you have now done the opposite, by highlighting weirdness about your age.) * Speaking of dates, if there are jobs from the 1970s on your resume, its time to take them off. Unless thats the decade you spent as a cabinet official or something, its really not relevant to your candidacy at this point.
